What are blood spots?

Blood spots or cherry angiomas are benign skin growths made up of a collection of dilated capillaries or broken blood vessels. They are red in colour and have a round appearance.  These are also known as Campbell de Morgan spots and can appear on any area of the face or body.

Blood spots are oval or circular in shape. While some blood spots appear smooth against the skin, others appear to be slightly raised. As we age, the colour and size of blood spots can begin to change. They can change colour and become more raised.

Adults over the age of 30 are more prone to develop blood spots.  These are not serious conditions, but some people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Blood spots can be safely removed by cauterisation. Heat is applied directly into the dome, cauterising the spot. The treated area can be sore for a few days afterward.

Only one treatment is needed to remove blood spots.
